Welcome to the second in Knightspire’s series of logo discussions about Grace Slayer! This post will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the choices made during the design process for Grace’s logo. Grace was the next logo we tackled after The Black Ronin. Both characters were very different, but we wanted to make them feel unified in quality and attention to detail. Above all, we wanted to express her personality through font and colour choices. Something bold and unapologetic, fitting with her rocker aesthetic.
Grace Slayer: Rocker Aesthetic
The Slayer is a rocker through and through. In her youth, she thrived on the stage at small but packed concerts in New Orleans, Louisiana and the surrounding area. Her band, The Dead Ringers, was a rock band, so we needed a font that embodied this chaotic and rebellious style of music. Eventually, we settled on a jagged-edged font that screamed independence and defiance.
The Brutal Vampire Slayer
Grace was and still is a vampire slayer at heart, and the design needed to reflect this. It had to be sharp, radiating an aura of danger and threat. As punchy as her sledgehammer, as brazen as she is. Simple yet effective, a rule that we aimed to follow throughout our logo creation process.
The Bold Colour Pink
For Grace, the type of colour needed was an obvious choice. It needed to be striking, brazen, and fierce. Pastels and other light or muted colours wouldn’t suit her character. We deliberated on a few different options before settling on pink. Better yet, it stood out against darker colours, which is Grace’s primary tone of choice. The pop of colour in an otherwise monotone palette showcases her true self and past glory, lost in a sea of suffering due to her alcohol addiction.
